This week we baked our first every gluten free Christmas sugar cookies. Here is the super easy royal icing recipe we used.
You probably have seen our gluten free Christmas cookie recipe, now lets get to this super easy royal icing recipe!!
Royal Icing Ingredients
4 cups of sifted confectioners’ sugar
1/4 cup meringue powder
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 tsp flavoring of your choice(we used clear vanilla extract)
Natural Food Dye of your choice
Combine meringue powder and water in mixer, whipping with whisk attachment on medium until frothy. Occasionally scrape down bowl.
Once mixed, add your confectioners sugar in small batches to the bowl. Mix on high for 2-3 min at a time, stopping to scrape down the bowl and add more sugar.
If you are opting to add a flavoring, add it now.
Continue until all ingredients have been combined.
I knew that adding the food coloring would thin out the icing, so I whipped until light peaks formed and it looked glossy.

This was our first time using this brand of natural food dye, Simple Truth. I think the hubs picked it up at Kroger of all places. Our kiddos can’t have artificial food dye, as it triggers their sensory processing disorder symptoms such as hyperactivity and sensory overload. We were so excited to start to see the natural alternatives show up in our local supermarket. I mean who doesn’t like food with fun colors every once in awhile?!
Needless to say we had a blast, and can’t wait to decorate cookies for all the holidays now!
